Best Adventure Film @ Vail

We had quite a weekend up in Vail at the Vail Film Festival. Ride the Divide won Best Adventure Film and we packed two houses so full that people had to stand in the back, sit on the floor and in some cases get turned away (bummer for that).

We were also the talk of the town on all the major news outlets. It was a killer way to kick off the film and we were so happy to have a lot of friends and family come up and support.

The Route

The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route is the longest off-road mountain bike route in the world.It is over 2700 miles long, has over 200,000 feet of elevation gain and crosses over the Continental Divide 30 times.

The GDMBR is the world’s longest off-pavement cycling route. It’s highlighted by long dirt roads and jeep trails that wend their way through forgotten passes of the Continental Divide. The Route travels through Canadian Provinces of Alberta and British Columbia, and the United States of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico (map). By Route’s end a thru-rider will climb nearly 200,000 feet of vertical (equivalent to summiting Mount Everest from sea-level 7 times).

Divide racers must not only be conditioned to endure weeks of consecutive 16+ hour days in the saddle, they need to bring other skills to the trail. The Route is unmarked and circuitous, requiring navigational acumen. It travels through remote backcountry with Grizzly and Mountain Lion density. Intervals between services are frequently 100+ miles and demand calculated food/water resupply – or else. Riders must also find shelter each night or bivouac trailside. In minutes the Rockies’ dynamic mountain weather can wreak havoc on route surfaces, skewing even the most near-term travel projections. Of course, it wouldn’t be a grand tour without the geopolitics of negotiating the, albeit lower-security, international border crossing at Port of Roosville, Montana.

The worlds toughest bike race is not in France. So says Outside Magazine when explaining the rigors of racing the Divide. Divide racers are unsupported, carrying all their own gear as they time-trial the longest mountain bike route in the world. I doubt we’ll see a Tour de France racer sleeping on the side of the road after 16 hours in the saddle, carrying all his own food & water anytime soon.

Tour Divide is an ultra-cycling challenge to race self-supported along all 2,745 miles of Adventure Cycling Association’s Great Divide Mountain Bike Route. It has no designated rest periods or set distances a racer must travel daily. The clock runs non-stop. She or he who can ride the fastest while making fewer, shorter stops usually wins. With an average time-to-completion of three weeks in the saddle, TD is the longest–arguably most challenging–mountain bike race on the planet. It is a contest for the ultra-fit but only if ultra-prepared for myriad contingencies of backcountry biking.

Tour Divide was born of inspiration from John Stamstad’s watershed `99 Divide ITT, and the US border to border challenge known as the Great Divide Race (ca.`04). TD observes all the historical Divide racing controls save length. It pushes the envelope further by staging opening day racing from the top of the GDMBR in Banff, AB, where MTB-legal wilderness of Banff National Park serves as an immediate test of mettle. The Canadian section adds only 10% more trail, yet rewards riders with unforgettable geology, rugged terrain, abundant wildlife, and an international flair cycling has come to expect from grand tour racing.

Whether voyager or voyeur, Tour Divide is a dramatic tribute to both human capacity to endure and Adventure Cycling’s excellence in crafting North America’s crown jewel of off-pavement touring routes.

It’s official. Ride The Divide will hold it’s world premier at the Vail Film Festival April 1 – 4, 2010.

Ride The Divide is in competition in the Adventure Film Showcase. So make sure you get yourself up to Vail, attend the screening(s) and cast your vote.

It’s been a long time coming getting ready for this day. It is going to be amazing to finally get this film in front of an audience. Especially an audience in our own backyard. It’s fitting the film hold it’s world premier in the Rocky Mountain community of Vail. Sections of the film were shot a few miles up the road.

We are planning some great things for this event. Stay tuned for all the details.
